Belated Mother’s Day Cards

Mother’s Day Cards

Obviously, the giving of the cards was not belated, but blogging about them is!

I made both of these at the NSD crop I was at, using a whole bunch of fun new (for me) techniques. The first one is a shaker card that I made with foam and my Silhouette, as well as some glitter and sequins, and clear acetate from a sticker pack.

TIP: you CAN cut foam with the Silhouette, it just takes a tiny bit of work. Just set the thickness and blade depth to as high as possible, and the speed to 1. Use some masking take to hold the foam in place. Use simple designs (like a circle). The Silhouette Portrait (or Cameo) will cut the foam, but depending on the thickness, it might not cut all the way through. If that happens, all you have to do is take an exacto knife and run it through the pre-made groove in the foam that the Silhouette cut.

I included the foam as part of the card by having it peek out from behind the white cardstock. I made a gold frame by triple heat embossing a cut out piece of cardstock with gold powder. I also used gold glitter embossing powder on the edges of the banner. Lastly, I wrote Mother’s with a sharpie, scanned it, imported it into Studio and traced it to create a custom sentiment with my own handwriting. I cut some flowers from pink cardstock and embellished it with various shinys/pearls.

For the second card, I used a stamp bokeh technique that I learned from a fellow NSD cropper.

I used my Portrait to cut various sized circles from a piece of scrap cardstock. I picked out three pink inkpads, and used a dauber to completely cover a piece of white cardstock. Then I used white ink to daub through the various sized circles of my template in varying opacities, with them randomly overlapping. For my first attempt, I was pretty impressed with the results! I then used washi tape and gold paper scraps to visually cut the card. I cut the same Mother’s shape from pink cardstock and double embossed it with clear embossing powder to get that shiny 3D look.

So to make up for my tardiness with this post (I’m busy, I have like 4 dance classes a week AND a recital coming up… yeah yeah excuses ;P) I am giving away THREE cut files. One is the the “Mother” word that I used on these cards (plus a bonus “Mom”). Another is the bokeh template. The third I didn’t use here because as a grown woman, I felt it wouldn’t quite be appropriate on a card for my mother, but I thought my design was super cute anyways, so I’m sharing.
